Joan Duff Bohrer
My Masters degree from Rutgers University was in Creative Arts in Education; focusing on how critical thinking in one discipline has similarities to and can contribute to creative work in another field. A pilot program in New Jersey sponsored by the New Jersey Council on the Arts enabled me to spend four consecutive summers at a residential workshop where I was able to mentor with a professional artist from New York City in the area of my choice. Each year
these 10 day workshop choices were : Poetry, African Dance/Modern Dance, Textile Arts, Visual arts, Jazz and musical theater.
This non traditional exposure to the discipline and focus necessary in an artist’s life has informed my approach to painting. It has encouraged a willingness to experiment with a variety of materials and to value some playfulness in the process. My study of poetry has created a need to find a significant title for each work.
